Indira Gandhi (The Iron Lady) was born on 19th November 1917 in Allahabad, India. The name before marriage is Indira Priyadarshini Nehru. Father, as I said above, is the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and mother is Kamala Nehru.

Most of her education was at home by tutors until her matriculation at Modern School in Delhi in 1934. Further school education did in Poona and Bombay cities the schools are affiliated to the University of Mumbai. When she was at the headquarters of the Ramakrishna mission had studied at VisvaBharathi University in Santiniketan.

The University of Oxford in England, Indira Gandhi was good at History, Political Science, and Economics but her grades are poor in Latin subject.

Indira Priyadarshini Nehru married to Feroze Gandhi (no relation to Mahatma Gandhi) and became Indira Gandhi. Indira Gandhi had two sons Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi

Journey Towards Prime Minister

When father Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was Prime Minister of India she was an unofficially personal assistant to him. End of the 1950s Indira  Gandhi served as the President of Indian National Congress party.

After the death of her father Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964 Indira Gandhi was appointed as the member of Rajya Sabha (Upper House) under the Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.

The State of Emergency-

The Emergency in India (1975-1977)  Prime Minister was Smt. Indira Gandhi and The President of India Fakruddhin Ali Ahmed were during the Emergency in India it was about 21 months period from 25 June 1975 to 21 March 1977. The Emergency is under Article 352 Constitution of India.

Sanjay Gandhi the son of Indira Gandhi entered into Indian politics during the emergency time. The most controversial period of Independent India’s history during the Emergency.

Lose of the seat in Elections Indira Gandhi After emergency (1977) Indira Gandhi lost her seat in elections and Congress party was defeated by the Yashwantrao Chavan.

1980 Election The Congress party under Indira Gandhi became Prime Minister again. During this year of 23 June, Indira Gandhi’s son Sanjay Gandhi was killed in an air crash. Tribute to her son Sanjay Gandhi dream of launching an Indigenously manufactured car, Maruti Suzuki. First India made car was launched in the year 1984.

Indira Gandhi ordered the Indian Army to enter into the Golden Temple, Amritsar of Punjab to remove Bhindranwale and his supporter from there. The Code name of this operation was Operation Blue Star and it took  1 to 8 June 1984. Golden Temple was badly damaged.

Indira Gandhi Assassination

The last speech of Indira Gandhi was given on 30th October 1984 in Orrisa. On the next day 31st October 1984, her two bodyguards shot with their service weapons in the garden of Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi. The names of the bodyguards of Indira Gandhi was Satwant Singh and Beant Singh.

Doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences declared that Indira Gandhi was dead. 31 bullets were fired on her with two sources of Sterling Submachine Gun and a Pistol.
